As part of the Cardenio project, Stephen Greenblatt has given support to companies around the world for them to produce their own adaptations of the Cardenio story from Cervantes’ Don Quixote. If you were to adapt the story, what would your play be?
“I would have it take place on some Cape Cod setting. I would have the Clintons and Monica Lewinski as characters. Maybe Arianna Huffington would be a great addition as would Rush Limbaugh. Stripped Bass would be served (can’t have Bluefish). Great potential for skinny dipping scenes and mistaken identities.” -WW
“I began before Greenblatt but, almost 60, I have yet to complete it. Cardenio basically comes to forgive Fernando at play’s end, as chief action, bottom line moral. Chivalric “honor” is dead; honest compassion is alive. Better Cardenio than Achilles.” -Dusty Dust
“Great question…it would be intertextual and pick up on stories within stories and the doubling of characters/actors.” -Mike S
“As true to the original as possible.” -G
