Left Behind

On Tuesday a couple of friends and I went to the Lookingglass Theatre to see a play. For anyone who doesn’t know because you a) didn’t attend Northwestern b) don’t live in Chicago or c) aren’t truly, madly, deeply in love with all the characters on Friends but Ross most mostest of all, the Lookingglass was founded by David Schwimmer. And 20 or so of his closest NU theater buddies. It makes sense, then, that he was in attendance on Tuesday night. Wearing a black camouflage hat. Now, I realize that celebrity etiquette suggests that hats guarantee inconspicuousness. However, when you and your friend are the only people in a small theater wearing a hat–albeit a camouflage one–you become exactly the opposite of inconspicuous. Still, it was the day before Halloween. Maybe he was going to a party after.

Another nomination for Nilaja Sun, Drama Desk Awards

Last Thursday the Drama Desk Award nominations were announced which included one for Nilaja Sun for her performance in No Child.

Nilaja Sun, Outer Critics Circle Nominee

Congratulations to Nilaja Sun for her multiple Outer Critics Circle nominations for No Child. Nilaja will be performing No Child from January 3 – February 3, 2008 at the Loeb Drama Center as part of the 2007/08 Season.

Jay Johnson from The Two and Only was also nominated for Outstanding Solo Performance.

Introducing No Child

It was Robert Woodruff who recommended that I should see No Child. I knew nothing about the show, and when I arrived at the tiny theatre on Sheridan Square in New York City where it had been playing for several months, I had no idea what to expect. Ninety minutes later I left in awe at the virtuosity of Nilaja Sun’s performance, and the emotional impact it worked on her audience.

Introducing the 07/08 Season

As I hope you’ve seen, we’ve now announced the A.R.T.’s 2007-08 season. I’m incredibly excited about these eight projects, I wanted to take this opportunity to explain some of the choices I made in putting it together.

The key factor for me was to bring you as wide a range of theatrical experiences as possible, from classics to world premieres, from shows built from scratch at the A.R.T. to guest productions of international renown, from opera and drama to comedy and political satire.
